DEAN MITCHELL

Dean has more than 25 years of award-winning magazine design experience. He has redesigned and art directed/designed a wide range of publications including TV Guide, Flare Magazine, Marketing Magazine, Maclean’s, Canadian Family, and Canadian Interiors. As a long-standing member of the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario, and The Society of Publication Designers New York, Dean has participated in numerous international magazine seminars and workshops, and has guest lectured on magazine art direction and design at the ARGDO’s Jumpstart Seminars, Canadian Magazine Publisher’s Association MAGS U Conference, and the Ontario College of Art & Design. Dean and his partner Susan Mitchell launched Fresh Art & Design in 1991. Ask him about his father and son downhill mountain biking experience. He fantasizes about publishing his first graphic novel – although he hasn’t written or illustrated it yet.

SUSAN MITCHELL

Susan’s organizational, managerial and problem-solving skills were honed during her career in social work. Susan was a staff member at a halfway house in Parkdale for ex-offenders, and the supervisor of a 120-bed men’s hostel in downtown Toronto, which, coincidentally, is just a short walk from the Fresh Art & Design studio. Susan changed careers to raise three children. She volunteered with Big Brothers as an in-school mentor, and assisted with school-based reading recovery and ESL programs in primary grades. Susan’s innate design sensibilities have been aided and abetted during 25 years of living with a (positive) artistic temperament. This also gives her a special perspective on design and designers. Susan finds joy in the paintings of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Toronto based artist Kim Dorland, and in the written words of Lee Stringer, and any scripts by the Coen Brothers.
